With Thanksgiving approaching, energy has been high among the students as they are getting excited for vacation. This week’s animal-to-find was the red fox. Did you know the red fox has such good hearing, that it can hear rodents digging far underground? This is important to them, since a red fox’s diet mainly consists of mice, rats and voles. The students themselves have keen senses, being able to spot our fox cutouts hidden in the leaves.
Wednesday’s group decided to once again return to Peeper Pond to explore the tall grasses that are still holding strong due to a lack of snow. Much of Wednesday’s free play time was dedicated toward “duck, duck, goose”. Most of the children didn’t know how to play, but they learned quickly from the students that did know.
On Friday, the group chose to go to Forest Camp for free play. Many of the children used the toy kitchen tools to cook imaginary meals, others built fairy houses out of sticks and pine needles. We later returned to the center for even more free play. Almost everyone climbed the stone wall in the backyard, pretending it was a pirate ship.
Both classes read a few stories during snack and lunch time including one about the power of listening. With this book, the students learned that oftentimes it is best to listen to how a friend is feeling and what they're thinking rather than assuming we know the solution and jumping right in. Knowing how to listen is a crucial skill for everyone and helps us to gain stronger connections with our peers.
Everyone is excited for Thanksgiving and the vacation and family time that comes with it.
