Conservation Field Specialist Americorps Member

Audubon Vermont's conservation team has an opening for an AmeriCorps member to serve the community by advancing Audubon's Conservation Programs in assisting with habitat assessments, habitat restoration, and bird monitoring at priority habitats across Vermont. This position is a great fit for someone who loves working outdoors and wants to grow their skills as a field biologist. 

This position begins March 13, 2023 and ends August 31th, 2023 (there is some flexibility with the start and end date). The position requires 915 hours for an average of 40 hours per week for 26 weeks. Member will receive a living allowance of $13,500 (pre-tax), and an education award of $3,247.50 (pretax) upon successful completion of service. Other benefits include health insurance, federal school loan forbearance, and various training and networking opportunities. Additionally, this position is fully incorporated into Audubon Vermont's team, so we are looking for an enthusiastic team player who is excited about or willing to learn about Audubon's conservation initiatives to advance our mission to protect birds and the places they need.

Maple Sugar Maker 

The Sugar Maker is a seasonal part-time position, hired in mid-February through mid-April. This position will work with Audubon staff to ensure a safe and successful operation of the 600 tap maple sugaring operation at the Green Mountain Audubon Center in Huntington, Vermont. The Sugar Maker is responsible for preparing the sugarhouse for the season, including setting up the arch, evaporator pan and all other sugaring facilities to ensure the production of maple syrup will take place with the first sap run. The Maple Sugar Maker will keep the sugarhouse in presentable condition both inside an out at all times. The Sugar Maker will work with volunteers and the Maple Sugaring Assistants on a regular basis to coordinate the gathering of sap. The Sugar Maker reports to the Center Director. They must be available and willing to answer questions and demonstrate the maple sugaring process to students, teachers and other visitors to the Center. Responsible for the timely breakdown, cleaning and closing of the sugarhouse at the end of the season.

Maple Sugaring Assistants (Seasonal)

We are hiring a Maple Sugar Maker and Maple Sugaring Assistants to work in our Bird-friendly Sugarbush. You’ll share this rich tradition with our community as you produce maple syrup the traditional way, gathering sap from buckets and boiling over a wood fired arch. You’ll also learn about the importance of managing a sugarbush, for maple syrup production and also for healthy, breeding bird habitat.

Conservation Interns (Seasonal)

Interested in learning about conservation efforts for priority birds in the state of Vermont? Conservation Interns will work closely with Audubon Vermont’s Conservation biologists to learn monitoring techniques and ways to create and enhance habitat for birds. Potential projects interns may assist with include monitoring Vermont bird species of conservation concern, working with private landowners on farm and watershed restoration projects, and conducting public outreach.

Policy Interns (Seasonal)

Audubon Vermont seeks candidates with a background and demonstrated interest in environmental law or policy to serve as a paid intern for the Spring 2023 semester. The persons in this position will work with the Executive Director to advance environmental policy while learning how to apply law, science, and policy for the protection of birds and the places they need to thrive. The internship is designed to provide a range of administrative and programmatic experiences with a focus on issues facing Vermont and Northern New England.

This position is for young professionals seeking a job in conservation or forestry and will work one on one with Audubon Vermont's foresters learning forest monitoring and management techniques with birds in mind.

Seasonal Educators, Summer Camp 2023

The Green Mountain Audubon Center in Huntington seeks experienced teachers, environmental educators, and naturalists to work in a nature day camp setting. The Seasonal Educator will work with 3-to 5-year-old and 6-to-11-year-old children as they explore the forests, brooks, meadows, and ponds on the Center’s 255 acres. Staff will work at both our Preschool Nature Camp (PNC) and Ecology Day Camp (EDC)--your time at the camps will not necessarily be evenly split--and should feel comfortable doing so. Educators will share the role throughout the summer of coordinating the weekly and daily logistics for campers at either PNC or EDC. Audubon will challenge you to enhance your leadership, teaching, and mentoring skills while encouraging you to share the wonder of exploring the most magical places at Audubon. Camp runs for 8 weeks, June 21 – August 12. There are six days of paid professional development and naturalist training prior to the start of camp. This is a full-time, seasonal opportunity with an estimated 40 hour work week.

Counselors-in-Training (CITs), Summer Camp 2023

Counselors-in-training (CITs) work alongside our camp counselors—experienced naturalists and educators—to deliver high-quality, hands-on environmental education and activities for campers ages 3-12. The program is structured to give CITs the opportunity to explore their interests in outdoor education and conservation, while also building the skills and experience to launch them towards their next education or career opportunities. We hope our CITs will become the next generation of Audubon camp counselors, naturalist educators, and conservation biologists!
