Welcoming New Youth Conservation Leadership Participants

We added 18 new youth employees to our Audubon team between January and February

Over the last month, we have welcomed 18 new youth employees to the Audubon Vermont team including 12 Junior Conservation Technicians, five interns, and one AmeriCorps Member. We can't wait to see the fresh perspectives, energy, and innovation they will bring to our work and to the Youth Conservation Leadership Program (YCLP). YCLP at Audubon Vermont provides paid service-learning opportunities for young adults including work-based learning programs for high school students, internships for college students and recent graduates in environmental education, conservation, and policy, and year-long service positions through AmeriCorps. The goal of YCLP is to engage youth and young adults in meaningful environmental work during a time in their lives when they are making important decisions about their educational and career paths. Read on to learn a bit about the new faces you may see around Audubon and what projects they will be focused on.

Junior Conservation Technicians
On a snowy January weekend, the newest cohort of Junior Conservation Technicians (JCTs) gathered for the first time at the Green Mountain Audubon Center (GMAC). The group of highschoolers travelled from across the region and spent the weekend hiking the GMAC trails, preparing for the program, and getting to know each other.
Over the next five months, JCTs will meet with experts on habitat restoration, wildlife and plant identification, watershed conservation, wetland ecology, and other natural history topics from organizations such as Audubon Vermont, Vermont Fish and Wildlife, Birds of Vermont Museum, Vermont Youth Conservation Corps, and local artists. Some of the projects they will work on include bird banding, planting native gardens, working in the sugarbush, and engaging in educational programming. They will work together to develop skills and gain a deeper understanding of the diverse opportunities present within the environmental field.

Interns
Since late January, five new interns have joined our flock! Our internships provide an exciting, hands-on opportunity for young adults to gain valuable insights into the day-to-day realities of the career paths they’re passionate about, all while developing both transferable and industry-recognized skills. Internships may run semesterly, seasonally, or for up to six months. We currently offer internships in environmental education, early childhood education, youth conservation leadership, forestry, and priority bird species monitoring and management.
