Playing in the snow continued to be a highlight of Forest Playschool; especially with the snow fort complete. With temperatures being on the low side, it was important to keep the kids moving around outside. Luckily with all the snow, it wasn’t hard to keep them active and in a playful mood.
This week’s animal-to-find was the North American beaver. Beaver dams are important for ecological health; they benefit the environment in many ways such as preventing erosion downstream or creating wetland habitats for a number of aquatic and semi-aquatic species.
Wednesday’s group decided to take advantage of the soft snow by sledding down the hill in the backyard of the Audubon Center. The students also added to the snow fort by widening the tunnel and creating a third hole through the side. We had snack and lunch inside along with a coloring page activity.
Friday’s group was in full force to enjoy the snow! After we found all the beavers we started the construction project, or deconstruction project of the tunnel. Using only the force and strength of our bodies we took down one half of the tunnel! We filled the bird feeders on the porch to make sure the birds had enough seed for the weekend. We journeyed for Forest Camp where we had a fire and enjoyed playing with the snow kitchen and climbing some trees too!
