Bring out the Birds

Ecology Day Camp July 21-25

Who let the birds out?! This week we got outside with our binoculars and explored Audubon's forests, fields, and ponds in search of our wild avian neighbors. The bird revelry also included playing games, building nests, and singing bird songs to celebrate what makes birds fascinating. 

Monday we were learning some of the bird basics. We enjoyed a bird scavenger hunt and then learned some bird songs with a game. We played birding Park Ranger and got to pick our favorite birds to be. We also got to learn about to use binoculars and enjoyed a bird walk and got to see some great birds! 

Tuesday morning, we learned about the different colors and patterns that birds have and got to pick our favorite to make a bird bracelet. We went to the brook to look for food that birds may  

Wednesday we started off right away and hiked our way to the Birds of Vermont Museum. There we learned all about the different birds who live or visit Vermont over the course of the year. We saw all the amazing carvings and enjoyed lunch in the gardens. In the afternoon we learned about beaks of birds of prey as well as the various nests they make. To cool down we went to the brook and continued to catch critters. 

Thursday we turned into birds! We made bird masks and played nest robbers in the morning. Then we got to make our own bird nests int eh woods too, hopefully a big will use it this summer! As a group we then started on a large nest that could fit us all inside! In the afternoon we enjoyed some time at Beaver Pond and looked for different birds that would like in this type of habitat.  

Friday was our final day of bird week. In the morning we made our own paper birds and continued to work on our bird nest. We then enjoyed some time at the River looking for birds and any sign of birds like nests. Int he afternoon we Play Bird themed Life and Death in the forest before our adults came for closing circle! 

What a bird-tastic week.
