The first snow all at Audubon welcome us on this chilly October day. Halloween is just a few days away as indicated by our students arriving to class dressed in their costumes. We had everything from witches and pigs, to jaguars and firefighters. Even Truman came dressed as a viking. With Emily gone for a teacher's conference, we had David, Audubon's "Science Coordinator" sub in and dressed as a football player.
The day began with the morning activity of drawing something from nature but with a "spooky" twist in spirit of Halloween. Some students drew trees with scary faces and others drew mountain ranges in the shapes of sharp teeth.
After the morning activity, we had our meeting to plan out the day followed by snack and story time. We then walked to beaver pond to catch amphibians and other aquatic critters where we found the last of the eastern newts and tadpoles.
Afterwards, we returned to the field to play several rounds of "park ranger"; a favorite game of this class. A couple of students pretended to be the animals they were dressed up as. It was good to run around in an open field warmed by the sun since it was only 29 degrees when the students were dropped off that morning.
We then had our lunch before embarking on another adventure around the woods; this time walking a giant loop around the trails and picking up any interesting leaves we came across. With our leaves collected, we used markers and colored pencils to create leaf stamps and leaf rubbings, leaving behind accurate and colorful drawings of individual leaves.
After our art project, we played some more field games to expend any leftover energy before having afternoon snack and journalling time, where we sat in silence writing and illustrating our thoughts. Despite the initial cold, the weather did not stop our group from having a fun day outside.
