Let’s go on an adventure! This year we introduced our first even Kindergarten Camp! This week your tiny trekker hiked all over Audubon, using maps and curiosity to find their way. We explored down by the river and up at Lookout Rock and in all the secret places in between.
Monday we started off with the basics. We discussed how to find our way, what a map is, and how we can use it. Then we created our own maps of places and spaces we knew. Learning about maps took us on a scavenger Hunt to find some different locations around Audubon. It took us to our final location where we had to create a potion to help us find out way back.
Tuesday we focused on learning about Cardinal directions. We worked together to learn about where north, south, east, and west are and what the spaces are in between too. Then we got to use a cool tool, a compass and
orienteer our way around the Audubon Center. We Hiked the entire Hires Trail and, on the way, would check regularly what direction we were facing.
Wednesday we journeyed to the Birds of Vermont Museum! At the museum we enjoyed a worksheet that took us through the whole place. We got to see all the wood carvings in the wetland, endangered, raptor, and nesting room. We also got to go into the workshop space and see how you carve and what that process looks. In the afternoon to stay cool we played a variety of water games.
Thursday we turned to the campers, and they led hike to the pond using their maps. At the pond we explored the space and tried to catch some critters. After some time there we then enjoyed a self guided hike to the Sherman Hollow Brook and enjoyed some exploration time there which led us to unclogged the brook! This is so important to the health and wellbeing of our waterways to help keep critters flowing and help keep it moving.
Friday being our last day and the weather finally cooling down we went on a big hike down to the River for some exploration time. We got wet, we built dams, and we had so much fun. We also enjoyed playing Hibernation at the river! In the afternoon we made maps of Audubon which we shared at Closing Circle.
