Secrets of the Sanctuary

Ecology Day Camp July 7-11

Audubon is a magical place to discover nature’s most mysterious plants and animals. From poison ivy to plantain, we learned to tell hazard from helper. We had lots of time for foraging, making magical concoctions, and building fairy houses, too in this magical wonderful week of camp!

Monday we focused on learning about plants. We came ready to get to know each other and Audubon. We enjoyed an edible plant walk where we learned how to ID the plants around Audubon too. We made a plant collage with some friendly plants we learned about and enjoyed playing some rounds of poison dart frog.

Tuesday we explored the world of insects! We got to make our own magical butterfly in the morning. Then a wizard Audubon Albert came to visit with instructions for our group, we needed to make a magical potion at the brook to help bring back the birds. As we were at the brook making our potions ever so slowing we started to hear the birds signing again! Our potions worked! In the afternoon we started to make fairy houses and played a few rounds of spell keeper.

Wednesday we learned about the magical world of water and the critters that live there. We made fairy crowns and then Audubon Albert came to visit with another task to help with critters, so we went to Beaver Pond where we caught some critters. We then continued working on our fairy houses and all picked plantain that we will then soak overnight in olive oil which tomorrow will be mixed with beeswax to make a salve. We played Wizard Tag in the field and in our journals wrote about magical creatures.

Thursday morning we were ready to have some magical powers and got to create our own wands. We then shared about our wands allowed us to do, some could control the elements, others the weather or could grow and control nature tooWe then used our magic to turn our CIT Lily into a Monarch Butterfly discussing all the various parts of a butterfly. We went back to the brook and learned about other animals that go through metamorphosis and then caught some of them.

Friday was our final day of camp for this wonderful week. In the morning, we made flower crowns and brought our magic to the River where we explored. We finished our fairy houses and, in the afternoon, Played Life and Death in the Forest. We ended our day getting a final visit from the Wizard and taking our adults on a magical kingdom tour.
