You wouldn’t be able to guess from the weather, but we are 3 weeks into fall! This almost 80-degree day sure made it seem like we were back in summer but all the orange, red, and yellow leaves on the ground reminded us that we are in fall. Our morning activity involved our fallen down leaves, we were tasked to make an animal with the leaves, we could cut and color the leaves however we wanted too. Some of us made fish in the ocean, others a lion, or a salamander climbing over rocks of a riverbed.
Our plan for the day was jam packed! In the morning, we spent what may be our last day catching critters in Beaver Pond. With the colder weather coming our aquatic friends will soon be swimming down to hunker in for winter. We caught many tadpoles, crayfish, diving beetles, and a few eastern newts as well. Other folks in the group spent time building a fairy hotel with a few pools, diving boards, waterfall, and a rock house.
In the afternoon the sun was so strong and so we made sure that our afternoon activities would be in the shade as best as possible. We trekked to the new spot we learned about last week, an upstream location on the brook that still had some water available. There we caught a few dusky salamanders, water striders, but the coolest were some HUGE green frogs that we were able to catch.
After spending a while at the brook, we went back to the clubhouse and enjoyed a quick snack and then got to work on our shelters we had been working on for the past 2 weeks. There were some great teamwork and conversations going on about the designs, and even some reconstruction happening too.
Next week we will be off for Indigenous People’s Day and encourage families to come explore on their own and see your student’s favorite places!
