Wildlife—and now climate resiliency—are top priorities for forest stewardship among both private forest landowners and the public across Vermont. As foresters and natural resource professionals, you play a key role in meeting this demand and shaping the future of our forests.

Join The Nature Conservancy, the University of Vermont, and Audubon Vermont for a guided walk through the Long Pond Natural Area, a 321-acre demonstration site showcasing ecological forestry in action. Explore active silvicultural projects that incorporate science-based strategies for wildlife habitat and climate-resilient forest management. During the tour, you’ll see a variety of forest treatments and stewardship efforts, including:

• Climate-adapted tree plantings, including oak, black birch, and American chestnut
• Stream restoration using wood from harvest operations
• Experimental timber harvests designed to support bird habitat and climate resilience

Participants will gain an introduction to the principles of managing forests for birds, biodiversity, and climate resiliency, drawing on current research from projects at Long Pond and other sites across the Northeast. The workshop will also highlight programs such as Audubon Vermont’s Forester Training and Endorsement Program, which supports foresters and natural resource practitioners in applying these principles on the lands they steward.

This workshop has been approved for 3 Category 1 SAF credits.

We will meet at Long Pond Natural Area (https://maps.app.goo.gl/R3vm1jKCwJEkM3ML7) and park at the former log landing just before the gate.  Please note that Tamarack Ranch Rd may be difficult for low-clearance vehicles to navigate.  

We will walk along a combination of Class IV roads and old woods roads for approximately 1 mile, with moderate (<250’) elevation gain.  The woods roads have uneven, natural surface and occasional small obstacles like sticks or branches to step over and may be wet in places.  If you have questions about accessibility, feel free to reach out to Lynn McNamara at LMcNamara@tnc.org.
