Fun with Fire Part 2

Week 6

We have been having so much fun these past 6 weeks learning new skills, playing in the snow, exploring the wilds of Audubon, and enjoying time with each other.

After the wonderful time that we had the previous week making solo fires, Sarah and I thought it would be wonderful to build on those skills. This week our goal was to team up and work together to build some wonderful fires. Before we could start on building them, we needed to collect our materials/fuel. After some free play we spent some time around the clubhouse collecting, dead, down, and brown sticks for us to build our fire. In no time our buckets we full of some nice tinder and kindling.

As always we enjoyed snack and a story all together, and with all of our new energy from our yummy snacks we played. Some of use worked on a fort near the clubhouse, others explore the snow.

Soon it was time to build out fires. After a nice recap discussion on fire safety as well as a recap on fire styles, wood types, and the 3 things that a fire needs to stay alive we teamed up and went forth in building!

The most common and easy fire to build, in my opinion, is a log cabin. We learned that it creates great air flow, and allows you to build up as the fire gets hotter and can light larger pieces of wood. The groups worked very well together and one group even created a system where 2 of them would go grab extra sticks while one stayed and watched the fire. This would rotate to give everyone a chance to grab sticks and also watch the fire!

As a nice treat for doing such a brilliant job some of us got to enjoy roasting a marshmallow at the end of our day!

Spring is coming, and Sarah and I cannot wait to see what the changing season has in store for us!
