Forest Classroom

Thankful for Forest Classroom

Week 10; November 20, 2023

The morning welcomed us with a dusting of snow! It was so exciting to see the snow on the group and starting to cover the trees. As we arrived our morning activity was sensory mystery bags! We had 10 paper bags that were filled with something from nature and using only a sense of touch and smell we had to make a guess of what was inside. After we all tried we got to see what was inside, one bag had mushrooms, another had birch bark, one had rocks, one bag had hemlock needles, and so much more! It was great to see what everyone came up with, and what bags stumped us.

In the morning we first went for a look at Beaver Pond, and to our surprise the pond was starting to freeze over. We had a lot of fun breaking up and the ice and trying to look through it. We discussed how once the ice is thick enough, we can explore around the pond on the ice! We took guess about how thick the ice should be before we walk on it, we have guesses from 1 inch up to 1 foot. The general rule of thumb is 4inches is safe. You can learn more here.  After some time exploring, we went to our fire circle by the clubhouse and worked on our fire building skills. This is such a great skill to practice overtime and constantly, lighting a match is hard, building a good fire is a challenge, and working together as a team is also a great lesson too.

We enjoyed lunch around our big fire and as Kyra and I kept it going, we worked on our Audubon Village. Some of us designed our roads and spaces, while others worked on building our shelters.

We played Park Ranger in the field and had such a wonderful time together outside!

How you can help, right now
