Season of Change

Signs of spring activities for Free Nature Playgroup

For today's activities you can go outside if it is safe for you to do so (a neighborbood walk is fine, no need to go to a park), or they can be done around your home. You could find a comfortable spot next to an open window or on a porch and take in the world as it changes around you! Make sure to pay attention to your senses (smell, touch, sight, taste, hearing) to best help you observe the transforming world around you!

Spring is a time of outdoor change and transition. Sun warms up, snow melts and birds return.

While outside, look for the following signs of spring

  • A new bird song

Take 30 seconds to cup your ear and listen for as many different songs as you can hear

  • A chipmunk looking for seeds

Be as quiet as possible as you observe its activity!

  • Green grass

Take a moment to feel the green grass in your fingers. How does it compare to brown grass?

  • Opening buds on a tree

How many can you count on the tree?

  • A patch of warm sun

Close your eyes and turn your face to the sun. Can you feel the warmth on your face?

What changes did you see in the world around you? As the weeks go on, record the following to track the change you see around you! You can add them to your phenology notebook!

  • Temperature
  • Number of birds you hear today
  • How many times you could feel the warm sun during the day.
