Pumpkin Day!

Week 6; October 23, 2023

This was probably the chilliest day we have seen so far; it was very much a wet and damp cold. Everyone came in ready to have a great day! We started off our day look for various leaves, what we were focusing on wasn’t color, or shape, but patterns on the leaf by insects. These patterns could be holes, or edges eaten, or mining, even something call “window paining”. We had a lot of fun looking at all the leaves.

After playing a field game, dragon tails, we got on our with hike adventure. On this hike we stopped by the River, Brook, Beaver Pond, and Peeper Pond. At each spot we stop we took 30 sec-1 min of quiet time to listen and look around. Then everyone got a chance to share 1 word about what they hear, saw, smelt, etc. Words like, roots, rock, current, reflection, calm, birds, quiet, etc., were mentioned. It was a wonderful reflective hike.

One of our final activities was pumpkin carving! We split into 3 groups and first designed the face of our pumpkin on paper. Then we drew on our pumpkin the face outline for Emily and I to follow to carve. Next, we cleaned out the insides, the seeds are going to be kept to roast over a fire next week! Lastly, each group worked together with Emily to carve the pumpkin face! These jack-o-lanterns are up at the office to take a look at.  Pumpkin seeds are also great for birds and other wildlife! At home if you’re looking for a Halloween craft to put out and help the wildlife, try making a pumpkin jack-o-lantern bird feeder, (just be mindful of bears). While groups waiting to carve their pumpkins, they either worked on their shelters, or did a leaf litter search.

We ended our day playing cat and mouse with the parachute.

Next week we discussed learning about fires and enjoying our tasty pumpkins seeds!
