What a BIRDTASTIC week! All of our preschoolers this week turned into birds and experienced Audubon through a “bird’s eye” view.
Monday we learned about bird nests. We saw how different birds use different materials, and that nests are all shapes and sizes. We flew around the garden trying to find the best place to make a nest, and landed at Forest Camp. Our craft for the day was using natural and unnatural materials to create a bird nest to take home!
Tuesday we began our day by soaring down to the sugarhouse field. When we got there, we saw the bird banding tent set up and learned that Mark LaBarr was catching birds in mist nets and banding them. He came back with two birds, a veery and a blue-headed vireo. We saw how he took measurements of the bird and after he put a band around the bird’s foot, we released them!
Wednesday we learned about different species of birds that we see around Vermont. We also listened and learned 6 different birdcalls and put our skills to the test by going on a bird walk trying to identify birds just by sound!
Thursday we focused on something very important, food! We went on a food hike searching for different food birds would eat at Audubon. We learned that a bird beak can help tell you what kind of food they might eat, and got to create our very own bird beaks too!
Friday we were water birds! We spent the day taking a nice long flight down to the Sherman Hollow Brook and explored around the water like a water bird would. We searched for food, made rock nests, and let our imaginations run wild.
Such a great week to end our Preschool Summer Camp Season!
