Falling Leaves

Week 5; October 7th 2024

Chilly fall morning welcomed with us at the clubhouse as the rain faded away from our day. After interest in learning about leaves a few weeks ago I thought it would be fun to explore more leaves around us and practice IDing them. With paper we either free hand drew, rubbed, traced, or stamped the leaves to give us a print, then using our ID guides we worked through identifying what tree the leaf came from. Many of our leaves were from red maples, sugar maples, Beech, and a few others.

After playing some games in the field we are to our conservation action. We cleaned out 5 more bird houses! There were 2 that we a little too far, so we will get those in the winter when it’s easier to get to. We cannot wait to see what new bird build nests in them come spring. Next week we will hike up to the office to clean out the remaining nest in the garden area.

In the later morning before lunch, we journeyed to a new area of the brook. Some of us caught more minnows and darters, others help clear the brook of leaves to help keep the water moving.

After lunch we took some time at the Beaver Pond. We explore the changes that happened with the recent rain fall, the new stream paths and the pond level. During our time at the pond, we found so many newts and a few water striders, tadpoles and one larger sunfish!

After the pond we enjoyed snack time and then spend time at our sit spots journaling about nature and reflecting on our day.

We ended the day with closing circle sharing about our favorite part of the day and then search in the leaves for any hidden critters.
