Come join us to count birds for The Big Sit!(R) weekend! 

Bring a lawn chair and come bird at the Green Mountain Audubon Center for community science! The Big Sit! is open to anyone-- brand new birders are WELCOME!   

WHAT IS THE BIG SIT?

A semi-competitive birding event originated by the New Haven Bird Club in 1992. It is free and open to anyone — individuals and teams — all over the world. The Big Sit! kicks off Saturday, October 11, 2025 at 12 a.m. midnight and closes Sunday, October 12, at 11:59 p.m.

WHAT WILL WE DO?

We will sit near the visitor center and count all the birds seen and heard between 8am and 11am from within a circle with a 17 foot diameter.

We will also chat and drink warm beverages and take in the beauty of the Audubon Center in fall!

WHO CAN COME?

ANYONE! But you must register. Our circle will be set up in the backyard. This spot has one slight hill to get to and is on a grassy lawn, but folks who use a mobility aid should be able to join us as readily as folks who do not use such aids. We will have access to indoor bathrooms. 

Join us for as long as you would like between 8am and 11am -- you don't have to stay for the whole time.

Birders of all ages are welcome (with a guardian if you are 13 or under)!

WHAT DO I NEED?

• Sign-up so we know how many folks are coming. The event is free but we gladly accept donations to Audubon Vermont.
• Bring a warm drink and maybe a snack
• Bring something to sit on.
• Binoculars, cameras, and scopes can be helpful but we have binoculars for anyone who does not have their own.
• You favorite field guide if you wish/need.
