How can we feel prepared when spending time outdoors? This week we worked up from small adventures to big ones! Embarked on a thrilling hike, learned vital survival techniques, and experienced the magic of spending a night under the stars!
Monday was all about finding out way and orienteering and using maps. We spent the morning orienting our way to lookout rock and then back to the clubhouse. In the afternoon we spent time down by the river and played some games in the woods.
Tuesday, we got to learn about some outdoor survival skills. We worked on some paracord bracelets in the morning and then learned all about shelter building. We learned what makes for a good shelter and why having shelter is important. Later in the morning we got to practice our fire making skills, we learned how to make different styles of fires like a log cabin, lean to, and TP while also getting to use flint and steal. In the afternoon Truman taught us how to use a bow drill, and we all got a chance to try too. We also make our own water filters to filter out sediment too. We enjoyed some time at Beaver Pond to end this eventful day.
Wednesday was our big and long day! It started with our hike up Camel’s Hump. We all enjoyed lunch at the top and played trail games up and down the mountain like, contact, alphabet games, riddles, and the Green Glass Door. Once back at Audubon we prepared for our camp out! We set up our tents and got a fire going where we roasted corn, potatoes, and enjoyed some toasty hotdogs too. In the evening, we played a game of Capture the Flag, flashlight tag, went on a night hike to beaver pond, and roasted smores. To end our exciting day we got into our tents and camped out at Audubon.
Thursday was our final day of camp for the week. We enjoyed breakfast all together and made sure to clean up our camp before some rain came to us. We learned some tracking skills, first playing Who Am I? And then learning about animal tracks. We worked together to match tracks with animals, learn their patterns (walker, bounder, waddler, hopper) and move like them. We then went on a tracking hike to Beaver Pond and search for some tracks in the mud. In the afternoon we enjoyed Life and Death in the Forest before our adults came for closing circle where we taught them how to build a fire.
