Forest Classroom

April Sun

Week 22; April 7th 2025

After the foggy day we had last week, it was nice to be welcomed by the sun! This was our first week back at the clubhouse for the rest of the session, and it felt good to be back. In the morning we worked together on an animal homes scavenger hunt. We couldn’t find them all, like the bee hive or a rock cave, but we were able to find a bird nest, squirrel nest, a hole in the ground, a fallen down log, and a few others things. We also discussed what animals we would find in these homes, like who would live in the hole in the ground, maybe a small rodent or snake!

Knowing how much the weather and space around us has changed since last week we wanted to explore Beaver Pond once again. We noticed some awesome tracks in the mud, they were goose tracks and then we may have spotted some beaver tracks too! We noticed that some of the pond side stream was being blocked off (not from the beaver) and we worked to unblocked it and allow the water to flow. We also worked on the steams flowing from the hillside to help keep that water flowing into the pond as well.

We spent the other half of the morning visiting the Sherman Hollow Brook, it’s been a very long time since we were last there. We noticed how the brook bank had changed over the winter and how much cold the water was there than at beaver pond. The rocks then caught our eyes and we started collecting some of our favorite ones. We then transformed the rocks into fairy houses to enjoy. We discussed that maybe next week I could get some rock ID sheets to help is know what kind of rocks we were finding, and I loved this idea.

After lunch and a field game we needed to wrap up a conservation action we started in the fall, the bird boxes. We cleaned them all out, but now we needed to make sure they were all shut and secure. We went for our hike around all of the trails and up to the office to make sure all 22 of them were closed and safe for birds to nest in this year. When we were at Peeper Pond we stopped to count all the frogs we could see, there were wood frogs, green frogs, and peepers filling the pond with sound.

To end our time together we had some reflection journal time. We thought about our day and how we felt and what fun we would like to have together next week. It's an amazing way to end our time together, and as always, we wrapped up with Closing Circle sharing time too.

How you can help, right now
