Some new snow from the weekend welcomed us at Audubon today. The temperature was raising the and cold and warm air was mixing creating some great fog. I started to pour upon arrival, so our morning activity was moved inside. To build off of last week's activity we used the OuiSi cards but instead of sorting them our task was to draw the continuation of the image. So if it was a zoomed in picture of a fish eye, then we would draw the rest of the fish body and where we think it was located. It was so great to see everyone use their imagination and see how we all think a little differently.
We then journeyed down to the sugarbush in search for the Golden Tap. Before we went wild searching every bucket we had some logic time. We talked through were we think the tap was place. We considered if it would be placed off trail in the woods but we decided that wouldn’t have been a smart location and would have lead hundreds of people to walk off trail and wouldn’t be good LNT practice. We were left with the idea that it must be on a tree along the trail. Then as we looked, we noticed there were a number of buckets that were really high up, so we also decided we didn’t need to look in those because the tap would have been placed for children to be able to find it. After going up and down a few trails we finally found the tap!
We spent the rest of the morning exploring Beaver Pond. It was fully unfrozen and the water was pouring down from the hillside. The water was so strong it was making so many little streams that were then flowing into the pond. Our group decided they had a mission, to help the water get to the pond and make more streams. Before we started, we talked about how making more streams would allow the same amount of water to flow, but you dividing it up, so less water will go down each path. Also, we discussed what damming up the stream would do. We thought it would just stop the water, but the water is still flowing from the hillside and needing to go somewhere, it would just divert somewhere else. We worked super hard to make sure water flowed in all our streams. Near the end we also noticed that there were a few newts in the pond! Spring has arrived and we are seeing signs of it all around us.
In the afternoon we checked on our fairy traps to find that one group didn’t catch a fairy but caught a spider that got stuck in a pool of water that collected in their hole. The groups decided they needed to go back to the drawing board and redo some of their traps. With some of the snow one group worked on making a trap that would melt and then have the fairy get stuck in the trap. Can’t wait to see if we catch anything next week!

We ended our time with some art and journal time. Many of use reflected on the day drawing our favorite parts, others draw the fairy they think their traps might catch. The sun finally came out as we sat on the porch reflected and we all enjoyed this fresh sunshine after a rainy and foggy morning.
