May 15, 2015: The River Surprise

"Just a little egg I am/ buried under rocks and sand./Soon I'll be an egg with an eye,/ then an alevin, then a fry.” Do you know what I am?

I'm a salmon! That's a verse from one of Chickadee's favorite songs that she learned while in Alaska and it was so fitting for today because we had a river surprise. Students from Hunt Middle School in partnership with Fish and Wildlife were visiting the Huntington River to release Salmon fry that they had been raising in their class.  Since they were going to be releasing while Forest Preschool was in attendance we had the chance to join in! We hiked all the way to the river (with a break for a snack and story along the way). Our preschool friends were paired with an older student and we let the little salmon go (well after some close-up investigating first)!

Then we did some exploring on our own before making the trek back to forest camp.

Hopefully in a few years we will see some adult salmon swimming upstream!
