Are you intrigued by wild mushrooms? Join Ari Rockland-Miller of The Mushroom Forager on a tour of September's wild flavors. When summer rains fall, the forests of Vermont can harbor a great diversity of wild mushrooms, including choice edibles like yellowfoot chanterelles, porcini, and hedgehog mushrooms. This guided foray will explore the woods around the Green Mountain Audubon Center while introducing mushroom hunting safety, strategy, ethics and sustainability. After the hunt, The Mushroom Forager's Jenna Antonino DiMare will prepare a simple but delicious tasting!

We will meet at the education program barn to start with an indoor presentation before heading out on the trails. This program will be outdoors hiking over uneven terrain, through the woods and fields of the Green Mountain Audubon Center. The usual route includes a few sets of stair and descending and climbing a hill. Please give us a call if you have questions about accessibility.

Participants should dress for hiking in the woods and bring water. This program will be held rain or shine unless the weather presents a safety hazard (such as thunder-storms).

This program is inteded for an adult audience, but teens are welcome to attend with an adult.

About the instructors:

Ari Rockland-Miller is a writer, instructor and lecturer on wild and cultivated mushrooms and edible plants. He is co-founder of the Mushroom Forager, LLC and an ardent mycophile who enjoys nothing more than the exhilarating feeling of the mushroom hunt. Ari has been sharing his passion for mushroom hunting and edible plants through the written word for over a decade. His writing has been featured in a number of publications including the Vermont AlmanacNorthern Woodlands and the Green Mountain Club's Long Trail News. The Mushroom Forager's work has also been featured on CNN's Great Big Story, New England Public Radio, Vermont Public Radio, Seven Days and Vermont Life magazine.

Ari became an expert in cultivating shiitake mushrooms in agroforestry systems when he managed Cornell University's Mushroom Research Project and Cornell University's agroforestry teaching site and farm, the MacDaniels Nut Grove. He has a B.A. from Brown University, and a J.D. from Vermont Law School.

At this workshop, Ari will be joined by Jenna Antonino DiMare, co-founder of the Mushroom Forager, LLC. Jenna is the business manager and creative director for The Mushroom Forager, and frequently joins Ari teaching workshops. She is the creator of the popular ForageCast, and is The Mushroom Forager's lead photographer. Jenna is intimately familiar with Northeastern forest ecology and relishes the treasure hunt of finding and collecting wild food. Jenna can periodically be found whipping up delectable morsels of wild mushrooms in The Mushroom Forager's forest pop-up kitchen, which will be making a special appearance at this Audubon Vermont workshop. Jenna completed a graduate program (MLA) in Landscape Architecture from Cornell University, and she received her B.A. from Brown University, where she studied architecture and environmental issues with a focus on sustainable agriculture.
