Audubon Vermont is pleased to announce three new maple syrup producers have recently joined the ranks of the Bird-Friendly Maple Project, with an additional six more sugarmakers anticipated to join by the end of the year.

• Dark Wing Maples in Wolcott
• Kathryn Nuissl in Berlin/East Montpelier
• Shelburne Farms in Shelburne

These sugarmakers have all made the commitment to include bird habitat into the stewardship objectives for their sugarbushes. Their maple products can now carry the Bird-Friendly label. This lets consumers know that their sugarbush is being managed to increase the habitat value to birds such as Black-throated Blue Warbler, Wood Thrush, and Scarlet Tanager. 

Audubon Vermont’s Steve Hagenbuch says “the Bird-Friendly Maple Project is a great way to promote the importance of the working landscape to bird conservation.  Not only can participation in the project provide a market advantage to the maple producers, it also ensures high-quality bird nesting habitat will be created or maintained in the forest.”
