Forest Classroom

Mud Season

Week 13

The one amazing thing about Forest Classroom is that no matter the weather and the gloomy sky, everyone arrives energized and ready to take on the day.

Early on we were ready for morning meeting where we planned out our entire day. We discussed the different places we wanted to go and things we wanted to do, and made sure that it all fit! We then enjoyed snack and a story where Sarah read us a book about a bullfrog and its journey through life. Once we were all fueled up we got on our water boots, grabs some bins and materials, and began on our adventure.

The first stop was to find yet another location to put up the game camera to catch another glimpse of the beaver. Where we put it last time, at Beaver Pond, had no success for beaver photos, so we wanted to try somewhere new. We went back to the location where we first had the camera and capture the pictures to see where across the pond we could put it. We decided on a location and went through the Hemlock Swamp to get there. Once there, it was muddy, but we found a great tree to put the camera on and next week will we come back and look at the photos.

After we placed the game camera we went back to the other side of Beaver Pond. Once we got there someone pointed out that they saw an owl swoop down into the woods. We slowly and quietly went to the area, and to our surprise saw a Barred Owl perched on a hemlock tree branch. We kept out distance but enjoyed the encounter for a while. Also while there we found a pickerel frog! It has some great blocked spots on his back and legs.

After our time exploring Beaver Pond, we journeyed to the Sherman Hollow Brook! This is one of my favorite places to explore. We watched a waterfall, threw rocks and mud balls, built rock towers, and enjoyed exploring this new location with this crew.

Before we knew it, it was lunch time and then almost pick up time. Before we got picked up we shared our favorite part of the day and ended with a wonderful game of park ranger! Let’s hope for some sunshine next week!
