Forest Classroom

Fire Building: 2nd Structure, A-Frame

Week 8: October 20th, 2021

What a perfect October fall day! With a chill in the air to begin, the bright warm sun came in strong and kept us nice and warm.

As our arrival activity we got the chance to paint mini pumpkins! We got to choose 4 colors to paint with and we could paint whatever we liked, a face, a cool design, and just have fun with it. Some of us had big plans and will need to finish our pumpkin designs next week. To warm up in the sun we also played a round of two of Park Ranger too!

After Morning Meeting and snack time one friend brought it a very special Share and Tell item. We were honored to have Emilia II, and ribbon winning Hen came to Forest Classroom! Our friend shared with us that Emilia II is about 1 year and 6 months old, she won first place at the fair this summer, and she loves people. Emilia II joined us for the whole day, she really felt like a part of the pack!

After this exciting meeting we gathered materials and headed to Beaver Pond for our next fire lessons. We went over the fire safety rules again and made sure that everyone understood that when fire is around we need to be extra safe. On our way to Beaver Pond we gathered dry sticks to make our fires. We grabbed thin sticks to lite right away and some thicker ones for fuel as our fires grow and get stronger and hotter.

Our task today was to build and A-frame fire structure. This is very similar to a log cabin but instead of a square you stack sticks in the form of an A and make a triangle. We got into 3 groups and started to make our structures. When a group was ready they would call Ciara or me over to give them matches to lite the fire. Everyone gets a chance to lite one match, and it’s okay if we aren’t comfortable. We were able to successfully get all the fires lit and kept fueling them. After we were finished, we put out the fires with water from beaver pond, got rid of the embers and ash, and then enjoyed some free play time.

We journeyed back to the clubhouse for lunch and to read more of Hoot. We then enjoyed a few rounds of Camouflage where even our Hen visitor played. We all had some great hiding places. Before we knew it, it was time to have Thank you Circle as our adults arrived.

Here’s hoping that next week’s weather is just as amazing!
