Highlights from Aquatic Adventures

August 13-17

What an incredibly wet and wild week this has been at Ecology Day Camp. This week was all about focusing on Audubon’s watershed.

Monday the campers made their own watershed journals that they used throughout the whole week of camp.  They spent the morning exploring and investigating the River to keep cool, while also building dams to see how it changed the water flow.

Tuesday they became super scientists, they went to the brook and preformed some tested.  They took a soil sampling kit to test the soil levels at the brook, and tested the water for dissolved oxygen, turbidity and pH.  Their results showed that we have a very healthy brook.

Wednesday they journeyed to Peeper Pond, Hemlock Swamp, and Beaver pond to test the water at all of those locations.  After they finished all the hard scientific work, they free explored around the brook and river in the afternoon.

Thursday was a wonderful day, not to hot and not to cold.  The campers followed our watershed by hiking along the Huntington River in the morning.  At a pull off, they painted some beautiful watercolors as well.  They ended the day by playing a camp favorite game, Life and Death in the Forest.

Friday is always a happy and sad day because it’s the last day of camp (yay!), but that means that camp is over for the week, or in this case, the whole summer. The morning started with exploring around the clubhouse.  Then they ventured out to the brook for one last exploring session.  They also practiced understanding the water cycle by playing water cycle rock, paper, scissor!
