Site Description
The Common Loon Lakes IBA Complex consists of 45 lakes across Vermont with the vast majority located in the Northeast Kingdom. Sites include both the lake proper and the associated nesting location, both natural (islands, lakeshore) and man-made (platforms). All sites support or have supported, in the recent past, breeding loons that have produced offspring in at least two seasons. A site list follows this text.

Birds
Common Loons are listed as endangered in Vermont and as a result these IBAs a particular to this single species. Because the IBAs within the complex can be found throughout the state there are a wide variety of other species associated with these sites.

Conservation
Common Loons declined during the 1970's and 1980's and were placed on the Vermont Endangered and Threatened Species list in 1987. Since then loon numbers have increased dramatically. Common Loon nesting activity is monitored throughout the state by the Vermont Institute of Natural Science in cooperation with the Vermont Nongame and Natural Heritage Program. Management activities include site protection and enhancement (platforms) as well as research into potential lead poisoning. Primary threats include human disturbance, uncontrolled draw-downs of dammed lakes and lead poisoning.
